Puerto Río Tranquilo · 3 h · starts 07:00, 11:00, 15:003 h ★ 4.98 (81)The Marble Caves (Capillas de Mármol) are wave-carved marble cliffs on Lake General Carrera, reached only by boat or kayak from Puerto Río Tranquilo. Boat tours take 1.5–2.5 hours from $42 per person; kayak tours 3–5 hours from $73. November to March is the main season, and mornings are usually calmer.
Check dates and live prices ↓All 11 tours start in Puerto Río Tranquilo — none leave from Coyhaique, 4–5 hours north.
Only a kayak gets into the narrow tunnels; the 5-hour kayak reaches caves you can paddle inside.
Best rated: the 3-hour kayak, 4.98 from 81 reviews.
Shared boats $42–75 per person; a private boat is $270 for up to 6.
Afternoon wind can cancel trips — book a morning and keep a spare day.
For most travellers the 3-hour kayak is the one to book: the best rating of any Marble Caves tour, all gear and the sanctuary entrance included, three starts a day. Rather stay dry? The classic boat trip covers the Chapel and Cathedral in 1.5 hours. Strong paddlers should look at the 5-hour full kayak.
Eleven tours, one village. They differ in three ways: boat or kayak, how long you are on the water, and whether the price is per person or per group. Only three have reviews so far; newer tours are marked New.

Pick by the one thing that matters most to you. Short on time, the 1.5-hour classic boat trip is the quickest; for the best-rated experience take the 3-hour kayak (4.98 from 81 reviews); to paddle inside caves, only the 5-hour kayak goes far enough. Families of up to six can hire a private boat for $270, and two people pay least on the $42 full boat route.

Every Marble Caves tour starts in Puerto Río Tranquilo and takes a morning or an afternoon, not a full day. On a boat you put on a life jacket, cross about 5.5 km of lake and slow beside each arch for photos. On a kayak you get gear and a safety briefing, then a 20-minute van ride to the launch bay before you paddle out to the formations.
Boat trips last 1.5–2.5 hours on the water. On wet days some operators hand out raincoats, and one boat tour lists waterproof trousers among what it includes. Start times can shift with the weather: one guest booked for 10:00 had a message the evening before moving the trip to 11:00, so leave some slack in your plans.
The 3-hour kayak tour gives about 1.5 hours of paddling in single or double sea kayaks, with a windproof jacket, spray skirt and life jacket included; no experience is needed. It runs at 07:00, 11:00 and 15:00. Wind is the main variable and usually builds after midday, so an early start gives the calmest water.

Choose the kayak if you want to get inside the formations and can paddle for about 1.5 hours; choose the boat for the shortest, driest and cheapest way to see them.

Our verdict · Have the morning and can paddle → kayak. Short on time or prefer to stay dry → boat.
BESTThe best time to visit Marble Caves Chile is November to March: about 15 hours of daylight in December and January and highs of 12–14 °C. Tours run all year — in June and July highs are near 1 °C. Spring and autumn bring a lower lake, which helps kayaks get into the caves.
Picked your month? These are the three best-rated Marble Caves tours, each with its own live calendar from GetYourGuide: the 3-hour kayak tour, the classic boat trip and the 5-hour full kayak. Choose a date to see real availability and the price for that day before you pay anything.

The Marble Caves sit on the western shore of Lake General Carrera, about 5.5 km south-east of Puerto Río Tranquilo. The village is on the Carretera Austral (Route 7) in Chile's Aysén region; the nearest airport is Balmaceda, about 190 km away, and Coyhaique is about 220 km and 4–5 hours by road.
Lake General Carrera covers about 1,850 km², the largest lake in Chile, and continues into Argentina as Lago Buenos Aires. There is no road to the formations: every tour starts in the village, and kayak tours first transfer to a launch bay.

A Marble Caves tour shows you three formations along about 300 m of marble shoreline: the Marble Chapel islet, the tall arches of the Marble Cathedral and the tunnels of the Marble Caves themselves. The rock is around 300 million years old, while lake water carved the caves in under 15,000 years, which is why the walls look polished and swirl in blue and white.

You can paddle through the narrow tunnels and under the arches, but not into the interiors of the Marble Chapel and Cathedral, which are protected. Boats pass close beside the formations, and only a kayak slips into the low tunnels. Caves you can actually paddle inside lie further along the shore, beyond the Sanctuary, and only the 5-hour kayak tour goes that far.
Water level decides how much room there is. In spring and autumn the lake is usually lower, leaving more space under the arches; in summer, snowmelt raises the water and getting into the caves is not always possible. The longer kayak tour asks for good physical condition, and the operator suggests bringing sunglasses and a change of clothes.

A shared boat tour costs $42–75 per person and a kayak tour $73–159. Groups can hire a private boat for $270 (1.5 hours) or $500 (3 hours) for up to 6 people, so a family of five pays about $54 each on the short loop. Kayak tours include the sanctuary entrance; check what your boat tour includes.
Some guests report local operators selling walk-up boat trips for less outside peak season; in January and February book ahead, as boats fill and rooms in the village are limited.

Travellers rate Marble Caves Chile tours highly: the 3-hour kayak tour holds 4.98 from 81 reviews and the classic boat trip 4.56 from 37. Most praise patient guides who look after first-timers and leave time for photos. The complaints are about weather more than the tours themselves: strong wind on the way back and, once, a start time moved the night before.

Three things catch out visitors to the Marble Caves: there is no reliable cash machine in Puerto Río Tranquilo, life jackets are compulsory on the lake even though swimming is allowed, and afternoon wind can cancel a trip. Plan for all three, keep a spare day if you can, and the tour itself is the easy part of the trip.
Puerto Río Tranquilo has no reliable ATM — the one by the Copec station is often out of service. Bring pesos from Coyhaique or Cochrane.
Swimming is not banned, but life jackets are mandatory on the water — the Navy cited a group that swam without them in January 2026. The lake is glacier-fed and cold.

The rest of this guide covers what the home page cannot fit: every boat and kayak tour compared side by side, how to reach Puerto Río Tranquilo by plane, car or bus, how the marble and the caves formed, and where to stay in the village, where rooms are few and fill up first in January and February.
